Since its inception in 1995 the clinic has grown steadily and more than 10,000 patients have been benefited with free medical care. The number of our patients has been increasing at an average of about 1,000 patients per year and so the need of more health care services. The majority of our patients are low-income people, unemployed or with jobs that do not have healthcare benefits, retired people who cannot qualify for Medicare, and undocumented immigrants.
The patients are seen on a drop-in basis between 120 and 150 patients are seen every Saturday. The current electronic medical record used since January 1, 2006 has registered a total of about 6,500 patients as of March 2009, including 3,597 women and 2,918 men all from different ages and ethnicity.
Predominantly, the majority of our patients are Hispanics, Vietnamese, White American, and African American. Thanks to our volunteer staff assistants we are able to provide interpretation in Spanish-English and Vietnamese-English.
The major health problems we have identified are related to diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and depression. Our pharmacy stock has been able to assist our patients with diabetes, antibiotics, and metabolic medications in addition to antihypertensives, antihistamines, and anti-inflammatory drugs. For many, our clinic represents their only source of routine medical care and we do have the desire to help the underprivileged in our community.
